10/9/2021 - Upper Salmon River Reservoir

My wife can't sit on the bike as long as I can so we made a stop on the way to a well to the north.  At the time of year I took these, the reservoir level is lowered.  This is why there appears to be such a long and shallow slope to the water.

10/2/2021 - Chittenango Falls

Even though this is a close-by waterfall, our first time visiting it was only a few years ago.  Being completely out of shape, it was a mistake to walk the entire gorge trail.  It isn't a bad if you walk a fair distance on a regular basis.  As you will see, it's a beautiful view if you can make the walk.

Parking Location: ///rewriting.worldly.cares
Site Notes: No swimming is allowed, you aren't even supposed to wade into the water.  There is a small fee for parking though I don't recall what the fee is as I normally go during the off season.

9/4/2021 - Ithaca Falls

This was our ultimate destination for the day's ride.  None of us had been there and it was a place I wanted to see.  Almost didn't take the camera with me as I tipped the bike over and made the mistake of picking it up by myself.  Seriously injured my arm so carrying anything was painful, but I force myself to.

Parking Location: ///breath.economies.letter
Site Notes: Definitely not the easiest walk but also far from a difficult one.  If I recall correctly, you can see the falls from the bridge crossing the creek though not very well.  But that is the closest you can get in a wheelchair.  I do not believe swimming is allowed.

9/3/2021 - Evening Fire

One of the things we truly enjoy is sitting in the backyard with a fire listening to the water run over the dam behind us.  Did a little playing with the camera as I've gotten some very cool "long exposures" using the Night Shot feature on my Pixel phone.  I feel the need to put that in quotes because that isn't the intent of the mode.  The only issue with that mode as a long exposure is that it is really taking several pictures with different exposure settings using AI to merge them together to get something that looks like a properly exposed dark scene photo.  Because of that, it doesn't work all that well when it's bright out...

9/4/2021 - Taughannock Falls Overlook

A place we found accidentally many years ago is somewhere we've frequented many times since, including the gorge walk.  For this trip, it wasn't our final destination so we only stopped at the overlook (which is free by the way).  No long exposure on this one as it was quite busy that day.  There is a place here that you can view the falls if you're in a wheelchair, but this particular view is down some stairs.

I had another shot without the vultures circling but I thought they added a little interest to the overall picture.

8/22/2021 - Lampson Falls

A wonderful place a bit to the north of us.  There's a very easy walk to the top of the falls.  It is really odd that there is so much water flowing over these falls but you can't hear them from the roadside parking.  Focusing was still an issue due to auto-focus.

Parking Location: ///acclaim.crunchy.congregate

As you can see from this photo, it is wheelchair accessible for a narrow chair.  It may be a little steep on the return if you don't have electric or someone to assist you though.

Had a long exposure for this view looking at the small cascade at the top, but I thought this captured the power of this waterfall with the detail.

If you are lucky enough to not be wheelchair bound and can handle a little steeper incline, you can head down to the naturally made beach for this view.

Some water spots on the lens that attempting to correct just didn't work.  Seeing this view makes me wish that I returned in the fall to catch the leaves changing.  There's always next year...

8/21/2021 - Flowers in the Garden

Just a few flowers around the yard, trying to learn where the auto-focus picks for focusing.  No matter how much I tried that day and since, I still can't figure it out.  It is important to me as I can't seem to focus with my glasses or without my glasses.  I have found that I can focus when connecting my phone and using that to see the live view, but that doesn't work for shots that I can't take time to stage...

8/3/2021 - Stony Brook State Park, Unnamed Falls

My first adventure with the camera!  There were some serious limitations with the pictures as I couldn't figure out what the auto-focus used for it's focal point and I wasn't aware of the additional editing capabilities of having the raw format.

Welcome to My Photography Journey

Hello there!

Thank you for taking the time to check out my photography blog.  I'm starting this as a way to share my view of the world.  To be fair and clear, this view is going to be very New York, USA focused though I'm sure it will expand in the future.  And by that NY focused, I mean NY outside of New York City.  I'm not a city person and this is a wonderful state for some spectacular views!  Posts may be fast and furious early on as I catch up on pictures from the summer of 2022, but will level off as I progress.

This journey began when I saw some of the pictures my oldest friend was taking.  It made me realize that I could share things that I'm seeing on the magnificent motorcycle rides I've been taking (also a new hobby).  Many of his photographs are simply stunning and he's even received some honors surrounding them!

I've also been fascinated by some of my uncles photographs, including some of the deep space pictures he's shared with me.  I will be attempting these photos as well once I learn how to get the telescope set up properly for my location.  I'm hoping that I won't have too much interference from lights and trees so that I can get something comparable to his amazing pictures.

I'm planning to post these with individual labels for each topic of photograph.  Because this is a blog, I can't do them as actual pages though through some searching, I was able to find a way to make it appear as such.  You will find them to the left under the search feature.  I am a bit on the cheap side in that I don't really want to pay for a site without knowing this experiment will draw followers and interactions.  Before anyone suggests it, I know I could use Facebook or Instagram but Meta (formerly known as Facebook) already gets enough information out of me.

Some views or photos may be repeated as I learn more about the exposure triangle, get new lenses, or learn more about editing.  I will try to remember to include details with each post (such as location, camera settings, editing details, date, etc) so that you can tell what was done and why it may appear to be a repeat.  Location information will be done using the app what3words.  The free app is available on both iOS, Android, and the web.  The company has mapped the entire surface of the world into 10 foot by 10 foot squares, each identified by 3 words.  Easy to use and share a location.

Editing is another point I should discuss.  I am using Linux as my operating system which limits my options.  Yes, there are free tools available but the learning curve on them is extremely high.  I am using Adobe Creative Cloud and have found it to be quite good.  There have been a few instances where something wasn't available or it wasn't easy to find but I have found it.

Lastly, sale of photos.  At this point, these are not for sale though that may change in the future.  I hope you enjoy and follow along.  Please feel free to comment with questions or suggestions...
