6/28/2022 - Portraits at Sassafras Mountain Observation Tower

My wife and I went to South Carolina to visit my best friend Jody.  We headed out on the bikes and this was our first stop.  Stunning views to say the least (see that post here)!

Parking Location: ///nuzzling.loiter.sonar
Site Notes: In theory, the tower is accessible.  I state it like that because it is a very steep walk up.  You will need someone strong or a good charge on your battery.  It is free though!

Notes:  I did the editing on this to give a bokeh effect not realizing I did it with the camera in the next shot!  Still like the picture so I'm posting anyway.

5/29/2022 - Robert H Treman State Park

My friend Geoff and I got out on the bikes considering going to Watkins Glen State Park.  They wanted more for entry than either of us had so we searched other falls in the area.  This park is close to Ithaca so it took a bit to get to but we could pay the fee for parking.  I don't recall why I didn't have the Canon with me but at least the phone takes some decent pictures.  The first place we parked didn't seem like it was part of the park as it was dirt roads and only trails.  We decided we didn't want to take a chance at having to climb back up so turned around and found the upper parking lot.  I did mean to go back in the fall so I'll have to add it to the 2023 list of places to go.

Parking Location: ///laptop.baskets.follows
Site Notes: I wouldn't recommend parking here, not sure it is allowed to be honest.  We weren't here long.

5/12/2022 - More Tulips

These were actually the first bunch of tulips that appears a few years after we moved in.  I actually like the colors on these much better with the white edges.  Again, this was captured with my phone and, apparently, the camera doesn't save the raw format so editing abilities are quite limited.  I just didn't have time to get the Canon.

5/5/2022 - Tulips

Most of the flowers without out flower beds were planted by the previous homeowners.  However, these just suddenly appeared after we lived here for a couple of years.  My wife doesn't really car for tulips so we truly have no idea where they came from.  What I find fascinating about them is the subtle color changes within each petal.

5/1/2022 - Lyons Falls

It was such a nice day, I decided to continue my ride and headed to Lyons Falls.  I found this lest year on the way home from an offroad ride.  It was the first time I've ever seen a dam on top of a waterfall.  Still strikes me as being odd.  I didn't do a long exposure with the Canon because it was so bright, I knew it would be difficult.  I decided to use the phone for that.  It doesn't capture the raw format when you take a long exposure so editing abilities are rather limited.

5/1/2022 - Salmon River Falls

Another early season ride included a climb down the gorge trail.  I thought it would be well worth the effort it took to climb down considering the beautiful day.  It is rather steep even with a couple of switchbacks.  I believe the falls are around 115 feet.  Beautiful view on a wonderful day.  The first shot is actually 2 photos.  One where I exposed the sky appropriately and one with the falls exposed correctly.  The second shot is (or was) an experimental feature of the Pixel phone camera.  I found this feature truly just before I took the picture.  It's actually an impressive feature and gives me more reason to believe the only reason for a still camera is the sensor size.  Phones just do not have the space for a sensor as large as what is in a quality camera.

Parking Location: ///nights.calm.alligators
Site Notes: There is a wheelchair accessible path with 2 locations you can view the falls from.

10/9/2021 - Grunerts Falls Tree

Just experimenting with getting a color to pop.  There may be a faster and easier way that I haven't found, but I'm pleased with the results.

See the original post for site details and other pictures from the site.

Subject: Tree
Note: This is the original picture.

Note: This is done in a format of fully popping the tree out from the background.  I like it, but it almost appears fake.  A little too much.

Note: With this one, it truly reminds me of how much the tree popped when I saw it.  Obviously not true, but It is how I imagined it when I saw the tree.  I did this as an 80% reduction in saturation of the background.  It seems a bit more natural...

4/24/2022 - Taughannock Falls Overlook

Early season bike ride where I wasn't expecting to go far enough to really see some falls so I didn't bring the Canon.  Was playing with my new Pixel 6 and the zoom features.  I wasn't going to post this except that it provides the view you would have if you were wheelchair bound or couldn't handle the stairs.

12/30/2021 - Vince and Patty

I don't make friends easily but one person I met while riding that has remained a very good friend since is Vince.  We've spent many days on the side of the trail laughing for almost as long as we spent riding.  My wife and I finally had the opportunity to head out his way for dinner and to meet his wife.  Had a wonderful time and we truly need to do it again!

11/7/2021 - Sunset at Sylvan Beach

Not often that we have temperatures in the mid-50s (Fahrenheit) in central New York.  My intent was to ride around Oneida Lake, but that didn't work out.  I made it about 1/3 of the way and needed to change to some warmer gloves.  While standing there watching the sunset, I realized I would be crazy to attempt the intended ride as the temperature was dropping fast.  If I recall correctly, by the time I got home around 18:00, the temp was down around 40.  Unfortunately, I didn't have the Canon with me and you can tell if you look closely around the trees and people walking in the second.  Still pretty amazing pictures considering they were "only" with a phone...

10/9/2021 - Portraits at Grunerts Falls

10/9/2021 - Grunerts Falls

We were attempting to get to Iowa falls but Google Maps told us to turn into someone's driveway, or what appeared to be a driveway.  We rode a little farther but found nothing other than a fisherman's access parking lot.  The cascades next to it looked similar to the pictures I had seen so we assumed we had found it and Google Maps was wrong.  Turns out, we didn't find it nor did we find the apparent trail that leads to Iowa Falls.  Perhaps next time I guess.  I still found this to be an interesting place though the autofocus wasn't all that kind to me...
